I have Alienware m17 r5 Laptop
and it recently return from the lab from fixing due to power issues:
ever since. it tends to frquently crash whenever i would try to use Da vinci resolve.
when it does i would get a BSOD with an error code that said: DXG krnl fatal error
At first i tought i suspected was Hardware problem and that the guys in the
lab screwed something up when they replaced the motherboard.
I decided to investigate farther and test the computer a bit more.
I went on with the assumption the error has to do with the GPU becuse video editing is a GPU intensive task. and up untill this point it was the only thing that got my computer to Crash (Web browising and other lighter activtied worked fine)
the testing and its resuls were as follows:
Environment:
- I was working on the Devinci Resolve 18.6
- Windows 10 64 bit
- The project i was working were stored on an external hard drive.
- GPU: The laptop I am working with have two GPUs.:
- dGPU, GeForce 380
- eGPU: AMD. I currently do not remember the exact model.
- speccy snapshot of my Laptop: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/G6H7w1WSLyo3UaN4qEl2FAC
The actual Test
- I started to play a game called "Project Wingman." I did not measure the time I was playing but I estimate it was somewhere between 30 minutes to an hour. Laptop performed as expected and did not crashed
- In the Nvidia Control Panel, I changed the settings from "Optimus" to "Use Nvidia Graphical" only.
- i then continued my work in video editing. I measured the time I was working with a timer. I worked for around 40 minutes and again, the laptop performed well and did not crash.
- I opened another game, this time God of War 2018. In the game settings, I changed the GPU to the integrated GPU. I played for roughly 50 minutes. And once again, the laptop performed as expected and did not crushed.
At first I suspected the hardware damage, but due to how well it performed in my testing I am not so sure anymore. In fact I'm quite confused as for what could be the source of the problem. Is anyone have any idea what could it be and what can I do to fix it?
