Hello,

I have been having a problem plague me for a while. Half the time my PC is absolutely fine and has no issues. Other times, it has high CPU usage with no programs running. Sometimes booting it will fail to get to the windows login screen. Sometimes it will make it to the login screen, but lag far too much to even bring up the pin numbers.

Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFi

Processor: Intel Core i7 12700K

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660

Power Supply: 600 Watt - Thermaltake Smart Series - 80 PLUS Gold

Hard Drive: Crucial BX500 2TB SATA

Memory: DDR5 RAM 32GB X2

The Hard Drive and PSU have been taken from my last PC build, so they are not new components. My next step will be turning off fast start, as that's recommended in some other posts.

Anything would help, thanks.

Hi, Welcome to BC.

Please Post a "link" of Speccy Report.
Please install Speccy Free : https://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speccy.html
Use Custom Install
At the Top Left Corner of Speccy --> Click File and then Click Publish Snapshot Report, a window will popup and Click YES. --> Another popup will appear and then Click "Copy To Clipboard" then Paste that "link" to your next reply in your thread.

Download Minitoolbox from the below link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size
Now click "Go" and Copy/Paste and post the output text in your next reply

Note when share info such as ram the speed is needed as well as the maker.

600 Watt is not enough, should be 750w at least.

If the Video Card is not branded as NVIDIA supply the real maker/name as sometimes there is firmware or Bios updates for cards.

Sorry : I would suggest doing this 1st if you have not done so yet : from a DOS Command Prompt from START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | select "Run as Administrator" then Copy/Paste --> :DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command then Enter
if it finds problems then reboot. (Completed Successfully : means reboot)
then
After : please Open another Admin Command Prompt and please run Copy/Paste --> SFC /SCANNOW into the Dos window or Powershell and Enter.  Reboot after.

I have done that already, and that didn't change anything unfortunately.

That.. I did think of. At first, I used pcpartpicker and I believe it said my wattage was fine. I am absolutely down for an upgrade though. Thanks for that suggestion (Hopefully that's it! Also if you happen to have any suggestions for a good PSU brand, I'd appreciate the advice.).

Edit: Sorry, almost forgot -- RAM is Corsair Vengence 32gb 6400hz (both sticks)

You are running BIOS Version : 1402  Date:   9/8/2023     Current Version is a Beta : 1656    Released : 2024/04/19

1. The update introduces the Intel Baseline Profile option, allowing users to revert to Intel factory default settings for basic functionality, lower power limits, and improving stability in certain games.

Previous missed Bios Updates include will need to see your Motherboard Support Page :

https://www.asus.com/ca-en/motherboards-components/motherboards/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-z790-plus-wifi/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=TUF-GAMING-Z790-PLUS-WIFI

Modern Motherboards should always be updated.     As well there is Various Driver Updates that you or may not have missed.

Note : if running Armoury Crate you can Open it and Click the Gear Icon on Bottom Left then Click the Update Tab.

Rely on the Support Page though.

Ram compatibility Speed to your i7 12700K : Up to DDR5 4800 MT/s      Up to DDR4 3200 MT/s

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/134594/intel-core-i712700k-processor-25m-cache-up-to-5-00-ghz/specifications.html

So your @ 6400hz is way to fast and can damage the chip (they will know/void warranty) If not know Overclocking you are.

Have concerns as Speccy is not reporting speed so no idea if throttled down or not.  The use of XMP would also be to fast.

To use XMP you would need to be running a Ram Kit under 4800.

So for this.. I have seen things mentioned about setting it to 4800 and then lowering the voltage in Bios.. I'm not quite sure how to do that, but that is more than enough to start with. I will look up what I need to do. Thank you very much for that.

In addition to the hardware issues already mentioned:

1) You canceled the upgrade to 23H2, a reattempt of which seems to be pending. You need to allow that to finish.

2) You have barely 15% free space on your hard drive. I suggest that you free up some space in order for Windows to perform correctly.

3) Your event logs are chock full of errors - more than I would expect on a system with a fresh (4/11/2024) Windows install.

Beyond that, I'll defer to the other helpers.

Wallpaper programs are a menace : Lively Wallpaper

You have some stuff in the MTB Report that is Disabled.  These should be enabled again I would think since it is a Intel Device.

Device ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_467F&SUBSYS_88821043&REV_00\3&11583659&0&70

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=Device+ID%3A+PCI%5CVEN_8086%26DEV_467F%26SUBSYS_88821043%26REV_00%5C3%2611583659%260%2670

Have not looked to far but go through the report as is clear what is disabled under the Heading of : Application errors

Note : some of your issues will be cleared up if lower the ram speed, uninstall Bitdefender and turn back on disabled stuff as well as BIOS Update and Drivers.

After that a new MTB Report would be needed due to changes that will take place.

Can not rely on Speccy for this info : 1) You canceled the upgrade to 23H2, a reattempt of which seems to be pending. You need to allow that to finish.

Need to have to OP look in Updates.... to see what is going on.

EDIT : All Drives must have 15% or more free at all times.

Just a follow up: you do have 15% of your drive free, but you are close to the deadline; 270gigs would be 15%, and you have 1861gigs total with 283 gigs remaining free. I suggest not installing anything new on that drive until you make some space.

Windows needs what is generically referred to as a "Windows cache" file, which is a virtual section of the drive which is used to temporarily write needed information to while the normal processes are being done. If it runs out of space weird things start happening. That is why 10 - 15% should always be reserved as free space.

Howtogeek has a pretty good article on it. They recommend 25% on an SSD drive.

I will take a note of that, thanks. Unfortunately this problem was happening before this was the case, but that's good advice nonetheless. Time for a larger SSD.

After I updated my BIOS (said it included support for DDR5 Ram), it has been consistently booting properly. XMP auto sets it to 4800mhz so thats still good. I am still looking into a new PSU which I will hopefully have ordered today or tomorrow, but until then, It seems back up to speed.

I also enabled those drivers that were disabled, but in the device manager, they just show up with some download symbols. Updating them says they are unable to find updates, and I am not entirely sure what they are.

Lucky for me, I didn't think it was just going to be one update to fix this, but it seems okay so far. I will update this if any progress rolls back somehow.

Thanks everyone

EDIT: Today, I'll be monitoring and making sure nothing changes for the worse.

Hi, Glad system is more stable.

=== Devices: == those listed there did you disable them as they should not have been disabled ?

The Drivers from your Motherboard Support Page need to be installed especially the Chipset Diver as it tells Device Manager what is what.

Installing them should clear up any issues there.   When in Device Manager click on View then Show Hidden Devices and look for yellow Exclamation Mark or Red Warning.

You can take the name of the device and look it up for a driver.    If taking Windows Drivers from Update, Stop ! It is replacing your M/D 'ers with inferior drivers that are not complete even if says is from the maker. They are stripped down versions.

Note : The Microsoft Store is a Integral Part of Updating Windows 11.    Open the Store, do not need to be logged into MS and go down the left side of the Store to Library.

Install all that you use.

LOL, PeerBlock 1.2  Have not used that for years.  I got a Email once from my provider saying I am blocking their traffic to assigned IP Address range.  Had to stop using it.

Switched to online torrent storage site I could stream from.  Well worth it.

EDIT : I lean towards Corsair for a PSU
