My computer froze while I was watching videos on Youtube. Would not respond so I shut it off. When I powered it back on I started receiving messages that certain path items were typed incorrectly or missing. Help in resolving this is greatly appreciated. I am a new member here and have been trying to get this fixed for about 3 months. Thank you in advance.

Hello and welcome to BC, @biker1usa:

What version of Windows (11? 10? 8? 7? XP?) are you running (so that the Moderator Team can move this post to a more suitable sub-forum)?

We will need much more information about your system before we can provide specific help.

But let's get you to the correct support forum first....

Hi, Welcome to BC.

Could you do this before you do the above : from a DOS Command Prompt from START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | select "Run as Administrator" then Copy/Paste --> :    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command then Enter
if it finds problems then reboot. (Completed Successfully : means reboot)
and
After : please Open another Admin Command Prompt and please run Copy/Paste --> SFC /SCANNOW into the Dos window or Powershell and Enter.  Reboot after.

If this is a Branded System IE : Dell/Lenovo/HP please supply the full model name from the info on the bottom if it is a laptop or where  ever they might have put a sticker

Thanks.

I'm not sure if you were replying to @Pkshadow or to me. ;-)

The DISM & SFC "fixes" certainly make sense. I suspect there may have been a typo in your command prompt syntax? Or perhaps you weren't running them from an elevated command prompt?

In any event, I respectfully suggest starting with the Speccy & MiniToolBox "diagnostics" first, as I originally suggested in Reply #2. To do so, you would post the LINK to the Speccy report summary & would copy/paste the MTB report into your next reply here in this thread.

But it's up to you. And I certainly don't want to create confusion by having too many cooks spoil the soup. ;-)

BC Advisor, I downloaded the minitoolbox and another item suggested. They will not install as it tells me the same thing. It was spelled incorrectly or is missing.

Hi, @biker1usa:

"BC Advisor" is just our rank, not our username or "handle".

@Pkshadow and I are BOTH "BC Advisors".

So, when you reply to "BC Advisor", you could be addressing EITHER or BOTH of us.

That is confusing. :(

I am "MoxieMomma" and the other helper is "Pkshadow".

(Look in the gray banner just above the profile picture to see our actual name.)

------------

Having said that, I'm not sure what's going on with your system.

I've never heard of the issue you report trying to run Speccy or MiniToolBox.

There are several possible explanations for the issues you report.

But - as we are not in front of your computer - it's impossible to say without more data.

Let's back up and start with some very basic information, please:

  • What is the BRAND NAME (Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, etc) and the MODEL NAME of the computer?
  • Approximately how old is the computer?

Thank you,

MoxieMomma

@MoxieMomma: With all due respect, the Farbar MiniToolBox is a portable stand-alone executable tool that does NOT need to be installed. :)

Thank you for that link.

I will tweak the wording in my instructions to say "run" instead of "install".

But you are the first person to nit-pick on that.

And I don't think that is the root cause of the OP's issues.

So, yes, thank you for pointing that out.

I'm not sure that really helps us, especially to have many people chiming in on the thread.

I'm trying to minimize confusion for  the OP.

Thank you again for correcting me.

Sorry if i caused any confusion. When I try to run pretty any program it will not open it, just says it cannot open this program as it is not typed correctly or is missing. I think this computer is probably junk and I will have to buy another one. But any help will be greatly apreciated.

It is also a sign of possible malware as well.  As they stop programs from running.

Try running this : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

EDIT : since we do not have things to look at are you running a 3rd Party A/V program.?  Not Defender ?

There is no typing required.............. no idea what you are doing. !!
