After installation of Windows 8.1 the PC will not boot unless I have the DVD disc in. If I take it out it asks for a bootable media. Boot order is harddisk and nothing more.

Here is my setup

That indicates Windows thinks the boot files are on the DVD.

I would do another clean install using the BC guide for doing a clean install for Windows 10 pinned at the beginning of the Windows 10 forum. The steps are the same for Windows 8. If the computer is UEFI then use the diskpart convert GPT command as outlined in the guide.

Hans, did you not see this suggestion that I posted on the other thread, I thought you did.

Why did you start another thread?

Don't know at the moment what your issue is, perhaps John will come in later and have an idea.  My only thought would be to Un-Plug all drives but the target drive, including the DVD and install with a Flash Drive.  Don't have time now to research but later I will look again.  Now that you have a speccy other members can chime in too.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

Rebuild the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) to fix some Windows startup issues.

I found something similar, see below.

IMHO I think it looks like some information is picked off the DVD installation disc and then the booting sequence continues from the HDD.

I thought perhaps something was missing in the MBR so I followed these instructions to repair it and it went through successfully but it didn't help.

BTW, I have tried to boot from a USB stick and it doesn't seem to work either.

Have you tried deleting BCD file and rebuilding it?

I left you directions on how to do that did you read them?

OK, I haven't been able to boot from a flash drive so I have to use the DVD for installation. I gave up WIn8 and installed Win10 but booting failed the same way. A change of disc didn't make things any better. I cleaned the first disc, converted to GPT and installed Win10 again. This time the boot resulted in a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. I went into BIOS and under Boot / Hard disc drives the boot disc was number four in the list. I moved it up to number one (kind of shot in the dark). Rebooted and now it worked.
