Good Morning to All, 

Laptop is a toshiba (rather old one from 2016) with Win 8.1.

Run Eset and after a update Eset dissipeared. I can see it in programs and if I want to click on repair I get this message. Also windows update stopped. Seems somewhere a setting was changed.

 Error Message--- user installation is disabled via policy on this machine

Any help would be much appreciated. I use my old desktop here now.

Try uninstalling and then reinstalling ESET.

After ESET has been correctly uninstalled, check to see if Windows Defender has auto enabled and allow it to update and carry out a full scan of your computer.  
 
Once done, restart, make sure Windows and Windows Defender are fully up to date, reinstall ESET if you so wish.
 
If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

You may have updated ESET to a version that does not support Windows 8.1. It looks like 16.0 is the last compatible version:

Hello,

Thank you for that. I looked at it and it seems something is blocking me from installing the tool. I keep getting the same responce as I try to follow the advice. Can something maybe changed in the directory.?

Are you signed in and running the tool as Administrator.

 

Problems like this can be caused by a couple of things, a bad update, incorrect removal procedure and having more than the one AV are three things that come to mind, if we can`t sort this here we will have to ask a security expert to take a look, they have specific tools for such problems whereas us techs do not.

With attached batch script, you can reset all Local Group Policy settings to default in Windows.

After restarting your computer, try to install Eset again and see if it resolves the issue. If you continue to experience problems with Eset or Windows Update, it may be a good idea to run a full system scan with an up-to-date anti-malware program to check for any malware infections that may be causing these issues.

Hello to all,

Than you for the advice. Not sure what happened, but after a complete shut down, battery out for ten minutes, the laptop started up again, eset loaded.I stopped all auto updates and cross fingers,so far so good.

All help much appreciated.

btw, I bought a new HP laptop with win 10 pro just to be on the safe side,old laptop already 8 yrs old.

Put linux on the laptop that had Windows 8.1 as 8.1 no longer receives security updates. Backup any personal data first including bookmarks.
