Hi, Welcome to BC.

Not really interested in download logs from a unknown place. Attach here please : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/698076/attaching-files-to-posts-on-bleepingcomputer/#entry4791802

And what are these logs ? Are the from the folder : https://C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther

Rather a old system, over 7yrs old.  Last Bios was 2014 and have you installed it : https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/support-product/6021?b=1&pn=DT.SQYEG.110

Please run Chkdsk /f on your C: drive

Until logs try updating all your drivers from the Support Page may have missed also as well as can try : running a Command Prompt "Run as Administrator" then Copy/Paste --> :
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command then Enter    if it finds problems then reboot. (Completed Successfully : means reboot)

Then another Command Prompt Admin and run SFC /Scannow

&

then go here after backing up your data and from the 1st button : https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Worse comes to worse would make a excellent Linux Box.

Hi,

I executed the step you told me. See attached files for the logs. But it didnt wrk out that way unfortunately.

After all, I finalized to update to Win 10. It seemed that there was an issue with the installation of the updates during the Win upgrade. I switched off the interconnection and was then able to upgrade.

However, Win 10 tells me now to activate the Windows software, despite the fact that I had a legitime Win 8.1 version.

How can get Win 10 activated?

Best regards,

Nikolas

Does anyone have any idea what is meant by "I switched off the interconnection and was then able to upgrade."

I'm guessing that the OP was being asked to create a Microsoft Account (not to register a Windows digital entitlement which would already be there from 8.1).

Disconnecting from the internet and installing Win 10 offline prevents that from happening, so you can just create a local account and login to the computer with that.

Hi, What happened was (most likely) the files / details etc for Windows 10 were sent to the computer already, but his internet was "overloading" the system.. Easiest explanation below..

When you upgrade the data is sent first (like updates), and then are processed once they have installed. Have you ever noticed how updates Download first, then Install after they are on your machine (then you reboot to complete)..

From Nukecad : Disconnecting from the internet and installing Win 10 offline prevents that from happening.

Well you can try out some of these steps:

  • Make sure that your device has enough space.
  • Run Windows Update a few times.
  • Check third-party drivers and download any updates.
  • Unplug extra hardware.
  • Check Device Manager for errors.
  • Remove third-party security software

@GauravSharma, in my case, I have completed all the bullet points you mentioned but I cannot remove McAfee Anti-Theft. I believe it was installed by Dell and is now unsupported by McAfee. They had a removal tool which, according to McAfee, no longer works. I have not tried the off line install so may give that a go. In the end I may be better off with a new hard drive rather than spend hours and hours trying to install on the existing drive which has hardly ever been used.

HI, why not just do a clean install and wipe the HP stuff/partition right out of it.

Grab all your drivers and Chipset in after installing Win10.

HI, why not just do a clean install and wipe the HP stuff/partition right out of it.

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/667627/doing-a-completely-clean-install-of-windows-10/

2nd Button : https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Grab all your drivers and Chipset in after installing Win10.

Block MS Driver Updates : https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-automatic-driver-updates-windows-10

Tried the clean install today. When I got to step 4, pressing Shift F10 will not open a Command Prompt or PowerShell session (This is also true on another machine I have running Win 10.) Windows key + X gets me to PowerShell but not while I am in the context of booting from install media. If I continue to click Next I get to a window that lists partitions on the drive. The one listed as "Primary" has an option to "Format". Seems logical that this would wipe all data on that partition and be the next logical step. Two of the other partitions say "Reserved". I forgot what the other one said but none of these partitions are large enough to load Windows 10:

Quoted from the Clean Install instructions: "4. If this is a fresh install on a machine that has never had any operating system on it, and you are not using a drive that’s previously been used elsewhere, you can skip this step and move along to Step 5. Otherwise, when you get to the screen that asks for language, press Shift + F10 (or the Applications/Context Menu key if your keyboard has it) to open a Command Prompt or PowerShell session (depending on how your system is configured). Type the following commands..."

So I can't enter these commands that make the install "Clean" although I think formatting the Primary partition would have the same effect but that is an assumption based on a pretty good guess.

Any ideas on how to proceed? Should I post this on the Clean Install thread?

Update: I just clicked to format that partition. As Dr. Brown said, "What the hell!"

Fingers crossed.

Update: Mission accomplished. Windows 10 installed, McAfee Anti-Theft has been removed. All is well.

Thanks so much for all your help!
