Hello Bleeping Computer community,
I have many fond memories throughout the 90s and early 2000s as a child with limited computing knowledge. I remember booting up the Windows 98 SE machine to play Quake II, or go on Microsoft Paint. I feel though if I was an adult at the time, I could have done so much more within an amazing era!
I admit - Windows 98 SE has really aged since then. It's nostalgica what makes me return. It's seeing people's old GeoCities websites, with the guestbooks, which makes me miss the 90s/2000s. A fun and more simple time. The only stress for me was Windows 98 SE crashing - which didn't seem to happen too often for me.
Windows 98 SE could have all the basics users may want: MSN Messenger for instant messaging, Windows Media Player for music, Microsoft Office for work, disc burning utilities, internet browsers for surfing the internet, etc. Whilst video gaming was limited, it could run Quake II. One of my most favourite games - Empire Earth - supposedly runs on Windows 98 SE too.
Today, I use Windows 98 SE on PCem virtualisation utility.
For any user getting started with Windows 98 SE, what essentials do you suggest?
Obviously, Windows Updates have been discontinued - there must be other methods.
What would you recommend for getting the most fun and enjoyment out of the old operating system?
