Chances are, your Linux system already has the HPLIP software installed. That's because all major Linux distributions regularly pick up the HPLIP software and include it with their distribution installation. However, if it is not installed or you need to upgrade to a newer HPLIP version to support your printer, you've come to the right place.

On this website you can download the HPLIP software which supports 2388 HP printers on nearly any Linux distribution available today.

You can also find answers to many of your questions within our new knowledge base, or post a question on the Get Help page when you can't find the answer directly.

For a more detailed overview of HPLIP see the About page or just browse the site and let us know what you think on the Get Help page.

HP Printer Drivers ‘HPLIP’ Adds Python 3, New Distro’s Support

hp-printer-drivers-icon.png

HPLIP, HP print, scan and fax drivers for Linux, has recently reached the 3.15.2 release with new Linux distributions support, Python 3 support, and a few bug fixes.

For the Python 3 support for HPLIP, there are some limitations:

  •
  • Doesn’t support Fax Cover Page in Python 3 environments
  •
  • XSane installation failed message on Debian, type ‘n’ to continue installation when HPLIP tools ask to retry xsane installation
  •
  • Cannot launch hp-toolbox for Python less than version 3.4
  •
  • Dependent package installation fails on Fedora
  •

New Distro’s added support in HPLIP 3.15.2:

  •
  • Debian 7.7, 7.8
  •
  • OpenSuse 13.2
  •
  • Fedora 21
  •

And the launchpad fixes in this release:

  •
  • Doesn’t build against libjpeg-turbo 1.3.90
  •
  • hpcups crashes if DEVICE_URI not set in environment
  •
  • Incorrect call to hpmudext.device_open
  •
  • plugin download fails if python links to python3
  •
  • Incorrect IEEE 1284 Device IDs for many models
  •

How to install/upgrade HPLIP in Linux:

First download the HPLIP installer, the “hplip-x.x.x.run” file at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/

Once the download process finish, open a terminal window and cd to the downloads folder:

cd ~/Downloads

Make the installer package executable (replace ‘hplip-x.x.x.run’ with the real package name in below commands):

chmod +x hplip-x.x.x.run

Finally start the installer and follow the onscreen prompts:

./hplip-x.x.x.run

Thanks for making it easy to find all this stuff, and a good quick Reference for all those that run hplip!  I wasn't sure to post here as it seems this would be a good Tutorial, or Pinned - not sure of the difference besides where they are located?  Linux Documentation is driving me Crazy! LOL.  Especially in the Printer and General Driver area, Graphics etc.  I have spent hours when I didn't need to, but it's all a bit disorganized to say the least.

pcpunk out!

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.
