Win 7 Computer Turning off suddenly

I guess first I will try to describe the fault ... While working on my pc all of a sudden be it only after 20 mins of working or an hour it just stops. First I notice the fan speeds change and the monitor goes black, mouse lights turn off but the keyboard still has the green number lock light on. The power button on the pc is still green and pressing it does nothing . to completely shut it down I have to turn off the power button on the power supply.

I replaced the HDD back in September 23 because i was having some problems heres the link to that Bleeping Topic https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/789410/possible-hdd-failure-on-the-pc-is-there-some-fixes/

I was thinking maybe it was a power supply issue so I borrowed the power supply from the hubby's pc I had it in for a whole week the and used my pc hard trying to get it to turn off again and nudder ... only thing was his psu did not have enough sata connectors so I did not have my DVD player plugged in.

So convinced it was the PSU I got a new one. I put it in plugged every thing in and turned it on withing about half an hour I was back to the same fault . So then I was leaning towards the DVD player going bad and disconnected the power from the DVD player hoping that would be the problem. This morning about 20 mins into being turned on it did the same fault again. So I guess I'm back at square 1.

Yup it stopped again while I was typing this out no lights at all on the back of the PC

System Scan results Crucial.com

J&W JW-IG41M-L3

PSU Thermaltake GX2 600W  Toughpower series

2TB SSD hard drive (new in Sep 23)

4GB DDR2 SDRAM 1 slot

PS:  I will be out most of the day but will be back later

May, or may not solve your problem, but cheap and easy:

Use your hair drier to blow through the fins of any heat exchangers. In both directions, maybe more than once, if you get any dirt out the first time.

Hi, So did you return the SSD that came and replace it with a proper on for the Desktop 2.5" ??

Heat, so ya above go buy a can of compressed air and clean it out.  Do not spin the GPU fans up with the air.

Have you had thermal paste replaced since bought this ?

From a Administrator Command Prompt (search for CMD and right click it Run As Admin) type SFC /SCANNOW and Enter it will take awhile with 4gig of ram.

Have you run chkdsk /r on your drives ?

Check that the front panel power button is not shorting out and causing a shutdown. Common problem. Post back if you don't know how to do this.

overheating was my first thought when it first started turning off and I did a cleaning it's always easy to need more though

@  Pkshadow

I kept the little SSD and got a mounting bracket for it to install,

Heat, so ya above go buy a can of compressed air and clean it out.  Have you had thermal paste replaced since bought this ? my thoughts also yes I have cleaned it and changed the thermal paste about 2 yrs ago I think i will be redoing just to be certain

Do not spin the GPU fans up with the air.  Please educate me to why this is bad?

as for running scannow  probably not an option  atm with the power cutting out so often

I will be going back to the hubbies PSU after he has finished the work he needs to do on his PC and see if it makes a difference like b4

Does anything else lose power on the same circuit?

@Post #6:

Power down, do not do this while the unit is running. Do leave the computer plugged in to the wall socket, just make sure it is powered down.

> Pop-off the side panel on the left, facing the computer; that gives you access to the components. Usually there are two thumb screws on the back of the panel, just back those out and it should pop off.

> Trace the cable running from the front power button switch, back to where it plugs into the mainboard.

> Carefully unplug that cable (pull straight up), revealing two tiny wire contacts.

> Take a flat-bladed screwdriver and cross those two contacts. The unit should power up normally, just as if you had pressed the power button.

> Use the computer normally; if your problems disappear, the front panel power switch is failing and needs to be replaced.

> If the computer still has the same problems, the switch is good. In that case, leave it unplugged, and now do the same thing for the front panel reset button. I have had both start to fail in the past doing the same thing you are experiencing, except that when the reset button failed the computer would suddenly reboot without warning.

I think that the danger of allowing fans to spin in an air blast is an Old Wives Tale and not a problem but but why take the risk, however you will need a stiff brush to take any dust off the leading edges..

A while ago a friend asked me what was wrong with his PC, as he had cleaned it out. and when I opened it, the insides were sparkling. However, when I carefully looked at the fins of the CPU's heat sink, I could see that the space between them was blocked with fluff.

Bleepin Madman no does not appear to be much else on their are not very many lights on this pc, about the only thing that i notice is on the back where the ethernet cable plugs is there are no lights when usually even when the pc is is turned off there is something blinking.

wee-eddie

thanks for the info, I have a few old tooth brushes I use for cleaning and some straw cleaners i got in the kids section of the department store they like little bottle brushes with really long handles they get in there real nice.

so hoping to have found the culprit IT DOES APPEAR TO BE OVER HEATING when i took the fan off there was a bunch of dust under there.   I cleaned it all off .

Next the thermal paste had dried out.

Now my biggest problem is I can not get the fan back on it has these plastic twisty locks on it are crazy and there is no room at all for the fingers to do them back up.

I dont completely pull the fan off because of this problem, I need new options on easier fan method of securing it to the MB .  some type of long synthetic screws

Dustbunny galore go and get new paste and scrape the old off gently with a qtip with rubbing alcohol and a credit card. Of course remove the cpu gently and do the same for the heatsink

all cleaned and re greased but I can not get the fan back on.   I need a new fan set up or something maybe some kind of long screws instead of the twisty peg things I have at the moment i just cant get them on and even in the past I wasnt even sure they were on properly    also in the long run so I can clean it more often

Fans are usually amazingly cheap. Its central boss should have a piece of paper on it with the part number and all its details
