Hello guys,

I have files on some CD-R Discs.

My Dell Desktop Computer, Windows 10, only have a DVD Player.

Can anyone advise on this, please?. Seems to be all obsolete now.

Thank you.

Hi:

Unless I misunderstood your question, your computer's "DVD player" optical drive should be able to read the CDs.

If not, you can buy a USB CD/DVD drive for less than $20.

(This assumes that there's nothing wrong with the CD-R disks you're trying to read.)

Download and install Speccy - https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Run it, and then go to File and Publish Snapshot. Post the resulting link in your next reply

Hi

Thank you for your responses.

This CD-R Disc has 23 document/files .doc

I can open and read the first document.

When I open any of the other ones all I get is a series of yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

                                                                                          yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

                                                                                          yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Those documents were copied probably about 7 years ago.

Now. 'Publish Snapshot', show my computer's specifications. Security: Is it safe to use that method?.

Even so, if I use that method, what would be the next step after clicking 'Publish Snapshot' ?

It sounds as if your optical drive is likely working correctly.
The problem might be with the CD-R disc itself or the files on it.

An easy way to find out would be to give the disc to a friend or family member and ask them to try to read the files on the disc on their own computer with an optical drive.

Yes, it is safe to publish the Speccy snapshot.
All we need is the LINK - please paste it into your next reply.

Thank you

Your optical drive should be able to read your CD-R.

And it seems that it can, as at least 1 file on the disc in question was read correctly.

I suspect that the problem may be with the disc and/or the files on it.

2 easy steps to help isolate the problem:

1. See if the files on the problem disc can be read in a different computer's optical drive.

2. See if the optical drive on your computer properly reads a different CD.

Thank you

You mentioned the disc was old. Also suggest you try cleaning it and have a good look to se if the surface is damaged.

note: Writeable CD's are well known for not being good for long term data storage. They will deteriorate slowly over the years, quicker is they are stored in poor conditions.

Yup, that's what I think is happening.
(Though I hadn't thought of cleaning the disc. Good idea.)

Going through the motions to confirm it.

I guess we'll see what Jaq3 reports....

I tested the CD-R (as was suggested by BC Advisor) on a Dell Optiplex 7010 and I am able to read all the documents. Issue solved.

The Speccy Snapshot I have posted is from the Dell Optiplex (7050) which cannot read the CD-R.

Thanks to everyone.

Go to dell.com and insert your service tag and see if there are firmware updates.

Go to dell.com and insert your service tag and see if there are firmware updates.

Good idea.
It appears to be an older system that was recently upgraded to Windows 10 from an earlier Windows version - perhaps Windows 7?

If it helps, this is the direct link for driver updates (this is the US page):
https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us?app=drivers

The search will be most efficient if you have your service tag or Express Service Code:
https://www.dell.com/support/contents/en-us/article/product-support/self-support-knowledgebase/locate-service-tag/desktops

Cheers

Edited for fat-finger typos
