Hey
I have an old MSI Z270 Tomahawk board on a computer (Specs ate the end of the post) that I'm using as a server.
Today I decided to upgrade the RAM for it and got stuck on this bizarre issue.
The board has 4 DIMM slots, the old memory was 2 x 8Gb G.SKILL Ripjaws V 3200Mhz and the upgrade is 4 x 16Gb Crucial Pro 3200Mhz.
The issue I'm facing is that the PC doesn't turn on (EZ Debug light just switches from the CPU and RAM back and forth, already tried to clear CMOS, can't even go to BIOS) with the new sticks except in some weird configurations.

It's better to show what I've tried:
G -> 8Gb stick from GSkill
C -> 16Gb stick from Crucial
X -> empty slot

X G X G - Boot and RAM shows in BIOS
X C X C - No boot
C X C X - No boot
C C C C - No boot
C X X X - No boot
X C X X - No boot
X X C X - No boot
X X X C - No boot

So I thought the crucial sticks were defective but then the bizarre part happened when I tried:
X X G C - Boot and RAM shows up in BIOS
X C G C - No boot
G C G C - Boot and RAM shows up in BIOS
G C C C - Boot and RAM shows up in BIOS

Specs:
i7 7700k
MSI Z270 Tomahawk
Corsair H100i v2 Cooler
Corsair RM750x PSU

Any help is appreciated

Hi, Welcome to BC.

The problem is mixing ram.  You can not do that these days without issues.

Run 1 stick till can afford a matched pair or set of 4.

Thanks!

That's the bizarre part, it only works when mixing, ideally I want to use the 4 sticks of 16GB DDR4-3200 UDIMM 1.2V CL22 CP16G4DFRA32A.M8FF but the PC wont boot with that.
I can't even boot with a single stick of 16GB, it only works when mixed like I showed on the post.

Memory Types  DDR4-2133/2400, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/97129/intel-core-i77700k-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-50-ghz/specifications.html

You match ram to Chip not Ram to M/B unless it is below. also need the QVL page of the M/B to see if the make of ram is supported.

Why the ram speed is slow.  Some Chips are.  As well when use XMP it needs to be slower than the max speed of the above or will be overclocking the ram and would void warranty of the chip.

So as per Intel page then see if ram is on here at that speed : https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z270-TOMAHAWK/support#mem

Don't ya just hate it when a plan fails......... :=}

While on the MSI mobo page it doesn't show the RAM as being compatible, on Crucial's website it shows that this RAM should be compatible with this Mobo (https://eu.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/msi(microstar)/z270-tomahawk it's the last one on the list)

So may get away with 2 sticks of 3200 but they will be forced throttle down to speed set by the chip.

Is not good to run it like that but it does run.

(I too have fallen victim to that before I found out, burned a i-7 4790K chip up as I locked the speed in.)

It is possible that the 2666MHz will run as might have been released after the intel Spec Sheet.

You could go that way but what is the return policy if it does not ?

Oh, no need to use that Quote All Box, left overs from times past.  Just type below or backspace the box out of the way.  I never see it on my end so forget.

Another possible issue is no further Support for the M/B.

Are you using the Win 8.1 Chipset Drivers and Intel Management Engine then updating ?

Did you get the last BIOS Version installed : v17

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z270-TOMAHAWK/support#bios

This also may play into the picture as well your i7 7700k is not Supported for that M/B.   Mixed and matched to much.

I cannot run the crucial RAM at any speed, it never boots unless I have one of the older RAM sticks inside.
Whenever I have them mixed up, both run at 3200Mhz seemingly with no problems, I'm running a memtest86 to test it.

The thing is I wanted to run only the crucial sticks

Yes, I have this one:

The i7 7700k is fully supported by this MB from what I can see on their website

...your i7 7700k is not Supported for that M/B

So the Chip can go to Win 11.  Might want to see if can get a M/B that can run it and is also on the Win 11 compatibility list.

Ya well if can run the 2 then do so.     Age of the M/B is a factor.

Suggest start saving up.

Chipset Driver should be the 1st thing installed after a Clean Install of Win 10.  It tells Device Manager what is there using the proper drivers.

Then since have no other choice you update by Win 10.

Never take a Video Driver from MS Update.

Ok......should always list that in your system specs.

So ya, no chipset then.

I guess wrong chip and wrong ram is more forgiving in that.

(gotta go) G'luck.

Yeah my bad I forgot to say that.

If anyone can help me more I would like opinions!

Since I can get it to work with 1 GSKIL + 3 Crucial there must be a way to get all 4 crucial to work

Sorry, I got no solution, on the contrary, I'm encoutering exactly the same problem.

Did you find something to resolve your RAM issue ?
