Hi all,

I am having an issue with my computer where all of my connected USB devices will randomly disconnect and then re-connect simultaneously. While all of these USB devices plug in to the back of the computer, some of the ports are at the top of the back and others further down, so I believe they are connecting to two separate cards/pieces of hardware. Edit: Upon closer inspection I actually realized that these ports all do connect to the same hardware. The only separate USB ports are on the front and I will try keeping something connected to those ones to see if they are affected.

I haven't noticed any patterns in the timing, but it happens several times a day and sometimes several times per hour. I have done plenty of googling and have made sure my USB devices are not allowed to be powered off by windows. I've updated my drivers and even updated my chipset yesterday, but to no avail.

I am using Windows 10 Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.648). I'm hoping it is not a hardware issue.

I purchased the computer online from BestBuy about a week before Christmas. This is the exact computer, if it helps: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/cyberpowerpc-gamer-master-desktop-amd-ryzen-5-series-8gb-memory-amd-radeon-rx-580-2tb-hard-drive-240gb-solid-state-drive-black/6290721.p?skuId=6290721

I've been dealing with the problem since I got the computer but have had no luck finding a solution online.

I am not super educated on computer parts or systems but am willing to learn how to provide any information needed to help troubleshoot.

One thing I did do is go to the "Event Viewer" and do some exploring. Under "Windows Logs" -> "System", there is an event occurring at the exact time all of my USB devices reset.

It is "Event ID 18" from the source "BTHUSB" and reads: "Windows cannot store Bluetooth authentication codes (link keys) on the local adapter. Bluetooth keyboards might not work in the system BIOS during startup."

The more I thought about it, though, I'm thinking that "Event" occurs as a result of the USB devices restarting rather than being the cause of them all restarting. I don't use Bluetooth for any device and actually tried disabling it altogether, but the problem still persists.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

USB ports are monitored to save power by turning off the device when it has been idle for a period of time.  Please do the following to stop the USB ports from being turned off.

Press the Windows key and the X key together to open the context menu, then select Device Manager.

Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and open it.  All of the USB Root Hubs have a tab for Power Management, double click on one to view it.

There is a check box for Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, remove the check from this box.

You will need to know which Root Hub is being used and change it, or change all of them.

Hi there,

Appreciate the response. Unfortunately I had already tried this fix, as mentioned in my original post. It had no effect.

I updated my AMD Software again last weekend with an optional update. Weirdly, the problem didn't occur for 4-5 days after this update. I thought maybe I had solved it. My working theory was that updating the chipset (which i did previously) had actually worked, but maybe my computer didn't fully shutdown for the changes to take effect until I powered it off after the new AMD update.

But the issue returned the past couple days, and now I have a new suspect.

I've been using my PS4 Controller for PC gaming, and I'm starting to think it is conflicting with Windows and somehow causing all of my USBs to reset. I plug the device in via USB, but it does also have Bluetooth support which may explain the error in my event log referencing bluetooth. And would explain why it tends to happen to me mostly on weekends -- when I spend more time playing games.

Anybody else have any ideas?

If you open the Event Viewer under Administrative Events you will almost always see errors.  This is where knowing what you are looking for when viewing these errors is important.  You could spend a lot of time trying to run down all of these errors and still be clueless.

Microsoft has the following BTHUSB Event ID 18 information...

"This Warning event message can safely be ignored. The message does not indicate that there is a problem with the device".

I'm going to suggest that you run a sfc /scannow.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

This will need to be run from the Command Prompt using an Administrator account.

Press the Windows key Hiulwvj.png and the R key together to open the Run box.

Type in cmd, then press the Shift, Ctrl, and the Enter keys together to run the command as an administrator.

When the Elevated Command Prompt opens type in sfc /scannow, then press Enter.

This will take a while,  have patience and allow it finish.  Stopping this scan could damage files.

If no errors are found you will see the message Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, this means that no file corruption was found.

If the scan finds any ingerity violation please post the log of this scan.  Because this log can be very large I would suggest using a host website like Dropbox where you can open a free trial.  Post a hyperlink to your topic in Dropbox in your topic.

This worked for me. Thanks a ton. I had the new device sound in Windows just about every minute and it was annoying to say the least :thumbup2:

Thanks a lot your solution worked, if only I fouded it before!

I installed 3 times windows...

I send back 2 gigabyte motherboard and every time gigabyte asking me to send them back for new ones...

...

Now I can finally use my wireless device without disconection and use the pc without annoying sound.

The solution was:

"USB ports are monitored to save power by turning off the device when it has been idle for a period of time.  Please do the following to stop the USB ports from being turned off.

Press the Windows key and the X key together to open the context menu, then select Device Manager.

My config:
gigabyte x570 pro wifi
ryzen 3700
windows 10 pro

Hi there.

I might be a bit late, but have you found a solution yet? My devices have been restarting for about 5 months now after I got my new pc.

I have the exact same problem, except that most of my USB devices are connected via USB hub. A weird thing I noticed is that during the "restarting", the devices which are connected to the hubs, restart, but for example my keyboard which is connected straight to my pc, works just fine as the error occurs. Also, my LEDs inside my pc restart as well, but that's because they're connected to Corsair's node and commander pro, which are connected to the motherboard through USB. So the problem is in the USB.

I have disabled the power plan thing which shuts down the USB devices after idling a while, I've updated my BIOS, I've updated my AMD chipset drivers and still the devices restart. For me, the sfc/scannow did find some corrupted files.

If you or anyone else has found a solution, please help a fellow human in need. Thanks!

hey bud, unfortunately i don't think I ever found a TRUE solution. however, some research online led me to find that my Corsair ST100 RGB Headset Stand may have been contributing. There is some kind of fault in the cord. So if you are by any chance using that product, I would recommend disconnecting it and seeing if you see any improvement. The problem eventually just kind of went away for me.

I am super late to the party, having this issue with a new build, Z790 chipset (Gigabyte) - not so new anymore, had it for 6 months.

I too have a Corsair ST100 RGB Headset Stand - that said, pretty sure the issue started before I purchased that. Some things I seem to have in common with others that have reported this issue are:

Z790 chipset

Corsair H100i Elite LCD AIO Cooler

Lian Li Infinity fans (with controller)

Thinking I might have to RMA my motherboard, although if it's a chipset wide issue, that's going to be a problem ...

Unticking allow Windows to 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, remove the check from this box' is something I already tried ages ago - didn't work sadly.
