Hi,

My PC and Synology are telling me that there are about 3 extra TBs of data on my Synology that are not actually there?

I've checked my "Properties" in both Synology and on Windows 11 for folder size and they all add up to what I know is on my Synology, around 6.--TBs. This is about 3TBs less than what properties in both synology and windows say is there?

Anyone know what might cause this and how to correct it?

Thanks,

John

That would mean that you have a lot of storage avail in your NAS. So how much do you have installed in it?

What Raid Version are you running the NAS Drive?

How many HDDs does the NAS Drive have in it?

What size is each of the HDDs?

Hi John,

While it may seem concerning that your Synology NAS and Windows 11 are reporting around 3TB more data than you expect to have on the Synology, there are several potential explanations for this discrepancy. Factors like disk overhead, data deduplication, compression, snapshots, temporary files, and caching mechanisms can all contribute to the reported storage utilization being higher than the actual user data size. To resolve this issue, you can disable unnecessary storage optimization features, clear temporary files and caches, run disk checks, and potentially contact Synology support for further guidance. A small deviation in reported versus actual usage is normal, but a 3TB difference warrants investigation to ensure data integrity and accurate capacity reporting on your network-attached storage device. With some troubleshooting and potential adjustments, you should be able to align the reported and expected storage usage figures.
