HP 15- f233wm Windows 10 Intel Celeron N 3050 processor 4GB SM 500 GB HD, running Avast
, Was purchased new in 2017, barely used. Not sure where to begin. I want to be able to use it safely. Unsure if I should just donate or upgrade it to Windows 11, etc...
General use currently, no gaming.

I don't think your CPU is on the list of processors that will support Windows 11:
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/supported/windows-11-supported-intel-processors

While some computer-savvy folks have managed thus far to bypass the Win11 hardware requirements to run it on unsupported hardware, doing so will be increasingly hard/impossible after the next major Win11 Feature Update (24H2), due to ship next month.

The BC hardware gurus will - I presume - offer additional advice.

Cheers

Windows tells you whether or not your computer can be updated to Windows 11 when checking for updates.

10 is still good for another year.

You can always install a Linux distro on it. If you need advice on doing that ask in the Linux forum.

I guess I should have been more specific. I would need to change out the CPU to upgrade to 11, but there's too many on the list to consider.

The Intel CPUs I looked up were described as for desktop, so am I correct in assuming they are not designed for laptops?

I for sure do not want to purchase something that would not be compatible with whatever comes after Win 11, if we are expecting that sometime soon?

Looks like an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 6 core with Wraith stealth cooler is the most affordable at $72.50.

Any thoughts?

"Looks like an AMD Ryzen 5 4500 6 core with Wraith stealth cooler is the most affordable at $72.50.

ANY CPU upgrade such as this particular upgrade will require not only the newer CPU but also a newer motherboard and newer RAM, so it wouldn't be just as simple as a $72.50 upgrade.
An AMD CPU will require a AMD compatible motherboard, as it is not be able to use the presently used Intel motherboard. Swapping AMD and Intel CPUs isn't possible.
Additionally as an aside, if doing the upgrade, then replace the HDD main drive with either a SATA SSD or a NVMe PCIe 3 drive (4 lane drive isn't really needed, and the older PCIe3 will be plenty fast) as these are cheap and very reliable.
(If going for the AMD desktop CPU such as the 4500, then may be an A series motherboard, not B series, as these are cheaper for desktop general usages.)

More importantly the Ryzen 4500 does not have integrated graphic, so this will require a dedicated graphic card adding to extra cost.
So if going with AM4 desktop CPU, then maybe instead the Ryzen 4600G or 5600G (the 'G' connate means it has integrated graphics) and you can then avoid the required dedicated graphic card. All AM5 CPUs now have integrated graphics thus skipping the need for dedicated graphics for general uses (unless followed with a 'F' meaning that CPU does not have integrated graphics.)

TBH even a Intel i3 will be okay for your needs. Any Intel without the 'F" after the CPU model does have integrated graphic and so that means avoiding the need for a dedicated graphic card. But again a new motherboard and RAM and so forth will be needed with an Intel CPU upgrade.

Most importantly and to the point, it does seem to be you have a laptop and any desktop CPU such as the 4500 or 5600G will not be compatible with this device. A mobile CPU would be required with a new mobile motherboard (not desktop board), RAM and so forth.

My best advice is to donate the computer and start fresh.
Maybe a good used or refurbished (like new with the free warranty) will fit the bill.
Or install Linux and skip Windows altogether and keep the laptop and then start learning Linux instead.
Or buy a new lower tier computer.
Or just stay with Windows 10 a little longer and wait for Windows 12 computers to be released to the public. Then buy new.

Thank you for responding. I saw an article about Tiny 11. Not sure that is plausible either!

It seems the more I learn, the more complicated this is getting. I am running out of time to decide what to do, too.

Tiny 11 is not supported by MS.

So no automatic updates will be available - in other words still using an unsupported OS with unpatched security and no system updates.

Tiny 11 is a hack and while we are not the Windows police we are not here to potentially help people get malware on their machines either.

"It seems the more I learn, the more complicated this is getting. I am running out of time to decide what to do, too."

How so - why do you need a good system ASAP and why is the time running out as Windows 10  Version 22H2 is supported until Oct 14, 2025.

Seems to be you still have quite a bit of 'time' left until the countdown.

I did mention "Or just stay with Windows 10 a little longer and wait for Windows 12 computers to be released to the public. Then buy new." before in a previous post in this thread.

You still have time left to decide as to which direction to follow.
