Starting around 2017, attackers set their sights on other operating systems like Linux and macOS and they have been increasing their efforts to target them. Linux servers in particular face potentially greater danger from infection.
 
Thus, neither Linux or macOS are immune to ransomware and malware (and haven't been for a while) as I explain in Brief History of Ransomware & Types of Operating systems affected (Post #19).
