The property management recently upgraded wifi to 5g/high speed or some such stuff. My old compaq laptop (windows 7) initially had no problem accessing the new network. The owner changed the SSID name due to a spelling error and I lost access.

I get the following error message when I try connecting:

Connection status summary
Connection started at: 2024-03-08 05:25:16-405
Profile match: Success
Pre-Association: Success
Association: Fail
Association status: Fail 0x00038002
Association reason code: 0x00030012
Result of diagnosis: Problem found
Issue referred to: RNWF MSM Helper Class
Security and Authentication: Not started
Connectable: No
     Reason: 0x00028006

Root cause:
The wireless settings for the network adapter on this computer don't match the settings of "XXXXXXXXXX"
The selected data rate is not correct.

Detailed root cause:
802.11 connection failed due to status code 18: Association denied due to requesting station not supporting all of the data rates in the BSSBasicRateSet parameter

Repair option:
Change the wireless router or access point settings for "XXXXXXXXXX"
The wireless network adapter settings on this computer may be incompatible with this network
If you set up or own this network, change the settings on the wireless router or access point to be compatible with the settings on this computer. Otherwise, contact the network administrator or your hardware manufacturer for further assistance.

Reset your wireless network adapter This will disable and then enable the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" on this computer.

Root cause:
Wireless association to "XXXXXXXXXX" failed
A response was not received from the router or access point.

Specs:

I did a hard reboot. I then deleted the wireless profile. Haven't rebooted since though I don't see what difference that will make.

Property management assures me that the current settings are backwards compatible.

A neighbor's fairly old HP laptop (windows 10) had no problem accessing the network. Don't know if it can access 5g. It has the following specs:
Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Date                      : 2016-03-26
Version                   : 3.0.2.201

Type                      : Native Wi-Fi Driver
Radio types supported     : 802.11b 802.11g 802.11n
FIPS 140-2 mode supported : Yes

The wifi says 802.1X protocol: No. Don't know what, if any, significance that has.

As of today I get a new message.

Problem with wireless adapter or access point

Root cause:
Wireless association to "XXXXXXXXXX" failed
A response was not received from the router or access point.

Detailed root cause:
Wireless association to this network failed. Windows did not receive any response from the wireless router or accesspoint.

Repair option:
Look for causes of low wireless signal quality
The signal is weak due to distance or interference.
Windows Help and Support can provide more information about this problem.

The modem is in the unit directly above me, literally above my head. Signal strength is excellent, radio type is 802.11n, don't remember what it used to be but I vaguely recall that it may have been the same when I had access.

The card doesn't likely work with the AP there is no association that indicates a hardware flaw.

Thanks for replying. So what are the simplest steps? Software upgrade? Change settings in gateway/router?

That's all you can do in order to connect to a router you need to associate with it. Once that's done it will start the dhcp process.

There must be a way to reconfigure the gateway/router to include slower speeds.
