Virtual Directory Security in IIS5.0

I have a web server setup at our datacenter. it is a windows 2000 server machine running iis5. In IIS i have a virtual directory setup so users can put files on the server to be backed up and shared with everyone. Anonymous access is disabled, and i have integrated windows authentication checked. Each user has a local username and password to the server that they use when they access the virtual directory. The problem im having is that it constantly asks for the username and password anytime you do things in the folder (open the folder, open each file, etc) even when i have save password checked. This is really annoying and my users spend half their day entering the same password 100 times to do their job. Anyone have any idea whats going on here?

does anyone know any free alternatives to using virtual directory? if not any cheap ones?

there also seems to be like a 50MB limit for transfers as it errors out with anything bigger. havent testing this limit on other pc's though, it could just be mine.

why don't you have mapped network drives instead? why are you using IIS for it if all your doing is file serving?

the file server is in a datacenter in a different state, is that possible to map? i tried it and couldn't get it to work.

But all your doing with this server is saving and dumping files, why not turn it into another file server?

what do you mean? it is a file server, i have no idea what your trying to say. the other issue is for it to be secure, since it is open to the web. virtual directories allow it to be encrypted with ssl. there has to be a reason why the save password checkbox does nothing and it still asks for a password anytime i do anything like open every file.

correct but i am not using active directory on the server just windows authentication. so basically each user has a login account for the server. they also use this same login for terminal services to access an accounting program i have on the same server.

also i just found where i can change the Stored User Names and Passwords in xp in the control panel. when i change the properties for the server in question and add the password nothing happens, the password field stays blank when you open the properties again.

yeah map drives would be great if its possible, i couldnt get it to work. maybe vpn is the answer. ill have to check with my hosting company if they allow it. i appreciate the help.

ok a little update here. i was setting up a vista machine and it would not let me add the network place so i tried to map the network drive and it worked. it will not work on xp pro but works on vista. hrm.

make sure 'Use simple network sharing' or something like that is ticked, you can do this by:

- open windows explorer/my computer.
- click tools -> folder options.
- scroll to the bottom and check 'Use simple network sharing'.

its use simple file sharing and yes its checked. theres got to be a setting with the server because all of our users use webexone web office and use web folders with that and dont get asked a password everytime they do something but with my server they do.
