Hi:

A bit more information would help us to better assist you.

Questions:

  1. What is your exact Windows Edition, version and build? (Example Windows 11 PRO 23H2 22631.3007)
  2. When did this start and - more specifically - what change might you have made to the system right before this started (e.g. software, hardware, drivers, Windows Update)?

Then, please provide some additional, basic system information:

FIRST:

  1. Please download, install and run the Free version of Speccy from here: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy.
  2. Then, go to File > Publish Snapshot
  3. Click YES > Copy to Clipboard
  4. Then please post the LINK to the report by pasting it into your next reply.

NEXT:

  1. Please download and install MiniToolBox from here:  https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
  2. Place a checkmark in the following boxes:

List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    List Installed Programs
    List Problematic Devices
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

3.Click “GO”

4. Please post the text of the results here by pasting them in your next reply in this thread.

  • Download Process Explorer and save it to the Desktop
  • Open Process Explorer, running as Administrator.
(Right click the file and choose Run as Administrator)
  • On the toolbar, find the gunsight icon on the right (shown highlighted in the figure shown below).
  • Drag the icon and drop it on the window

  • The executable that is associated with the window will be highlighted in the Process Explorer, check the file name and path, it may help determining the program doing that and decide if you want to remove it

You or someone who had access to the computer installed that app / program / tool. It is used to

control / set screen brightness.

DimScreen - Free Download

DimScreen is different from ScreenDim! most likely not the same application.

The only ScreenDim I found was not for Windows. I couldn't find that image in any of the programs.

So, perhaps the OP will post back with the info using the search Sleepy Dude suggested.

LOL

What an adventure! :)

Yep, it sounds as if we're back to the original sage advice: Process Explorer.

Cheers!

Hi,

Firstly, thank you all for the replies and suggestions.

I have sent the .exe to virustotal. The results are here https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/a9cb652b8fe99282e80bd19d7dd4177b6bfc2ffb0192141ea4e06f780a2ddd45/details

On the first upload, it was detected by 2 AVs (was submitted 3 days before). After uploading it, another AV detected as malware, taking the the total to 3.

I have since deleted it as I don't need it. The Folder that it was in was CREATED 11th October 23 and LAST MODIFIED 22nd October 23, so it looks as it has been on the computer for about 4 months (unless a virus can fake these dates).

I am currently running scans to confirm the computer is clean.

The company is supposed to by " FreeSoft " if anyone is interested. Thank you all once again.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. The Virustotal results are not significant, the program doesn't seem to be malicious.

If you don't use it and because it seems like something extra and not related to the system, it can be uninstalled.
