I am a music teacher.  Clients request learning songs and I need to hear them.  The laptop I had died and I need a CHEAP replacement.  CHEAP is critical.  Size doesn't matter.  Screen graphics also do not matter.

Here is what does matter:

I need to get on YouTube to hear the songs.   Is an ad blocker available for tablets?  I never had one before and I need to access the songs promptly and not have to wade through YouTube ads.

  • Can I get decent sound from it with an external speaker?  I note that phones tend to be excessively treble in sound.  I need to hear bass also but not boosted bass.  Just so I can hear what the lower end of the song is doing.
  • Doesn't have to be rugged as it will be stationary.
  • Cheap - otherwise I'd buy a new laptop.
  • An off-brand would be fine.
  • I need decent sound.  I had a cheap chromebook with external speakers and it worked fine.

Any suggestions?  Thanks!

How cheap is cheap. You would definitely get better sound using a good bluetooth speaker. You would also get good sound using a pair of good earbuds.

I paid $90 for an on sale Lenovo Flex Chromebook with a touch screen that has decent speakers. Being a Flex it can be folded to look like a tablet albeit the screen is 11"

I would start by looking at sites like Walmart and reading the reviews.

The item I am replacing is a Chromebook.  That is an option - if it is cheap enough.  However I want to explore the tablet more before I decide anything.  That is a good price as the ones I researched were mostly in the $200+ range  That is too much.  Earbuds are not an option.  I am working with a client present and that won't work.   Question:  what is the source of good sound quality using plug-in speakers?  What I am  asking is how dependent on that quality is the electronics in the tablet or computer?  I am thinking the computer/tablet internal speakers are an issue of course but what if I am bi-passing the speakers and accessing sound through the headphone jack?

I don't think the sound quality is that dependent on the computer. Don't get speakers that rely on computer power. What you want are powered speakers. I have a set of powered speakers with an attached woofer that has really good sound quality and bass when attached to an old 2000 emachines XP computer. But because you are looking at a tablet I would look at getting a good bluetooth speaker although I can't recommend a particular model. Good bluetooth speakers are not cheap.

I do Yoga and Pilates Classes, on a regular basis, and several of the instructors use Bluetooth Speakers with their phones/Tablets, for background music.

As the source of the sound is digital, what you hear is entirely down to the method of reproduction, not the tablet/phone

Most that I have seen are around the size of a baseball. Prices vary from $20 to $400. The cheaper ones have a short battery life, low volume and may sound thin.

However I haven't heard one that is really bad - yet.

Most towns in my part of Scotland have a multitude of Phone Repair Shops selling all sorts of gadgets, we also have a Pre-Owned Gadget Shop. All had at least a couple to chose from. The Second Hand Shop had a really fancy one, at well below half price, because the case was scratched

I have seen some off-brand  tablets selling for well under a dollar US.  My only use for this device will be to access music on YouTube for teaching, I chose the tablet because of the cost.  Thanks for the feedback.

Less than a dollar?  That doesn't seem legit.

I recently bought a Oppo Pad Air . It has 4 speakers but of course they're small & the output is limited but does perform well in a small form factor (it supports Dolby Atmos & the included file plays well & the speakers do give a good response for their limited size). The device started off with Color OS 12 (Oppo's light touch implementation of Android) & has upgraded to 13 fairly promptly & in fact this morning just applied the June 2023 security patch. I bought this from Amazon in the UK priced at £199.00 which is fairly good for the UK don't know what it would be like in the US but I usually find that the $ sign just gets replaced with £ here in the UK. It was to replace an aging iPad 5th generation tablet, which is still being updated by Apple but inevitably with software bloat is getting slower (it boots far slower than the Oppo) & I have to say the gap between Android & iOS devices gets smaller all the time). The built in storage is 64Gb with RAM of 4Gb plus the Oppos system has the capability to extend by use of the built-in storage this to increments up to a further 4Gb. You can also install additional storage up to 512Gb  with a micro SD card.

So far I'm impressed & have hardly gone back to the iPad (I tend to prefer Android over iOS but guess that's a personal preference).

Thanks. That's more than I want to spend, but I do appreciate the information.  I've thought of some new options.  I forgot that I have a small Acer laptop I bought as refurbished years ago.

I'm having trouble pulling in a decent internet signal.   I do not have my own internet account at my office as the owner allows me to siphon from his.  My desk laptop works okay most of the tie but this small OLD computer isn't working.   I don't know if I can upgrade to a regular version of Windows as I see and educational version of Windows is currently installed.  But perhaps a version of Linux would work okay.  All I need it for is to get on to YouTube.

Specs for this computer are:

Windows 10 Pro Education

Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045

Model TravelMate B117-M-108C.1.15

Intel Celeron CPU N3060

@1.60Ghz

1601 Mhz

2-core

There is little reason why that should not be perfectly adequate.
