It's not me it's a neighbour.  I'm reasonably savvy (but not with Apple), he is, how can I put it, an idiot, in particular lost passwords

So, he has an Ipad model 1, ios 5.1.1

He has a load of photos on it he wants to recover

Mr S Purist nitwit jobs made sure that there are no hardware ports, no USB, no SD card

SO.
tried attaching to email.  tried adding one of my email accounts (actually 2, yahoo and gmail)  smtp issue
tried connected to my home network, fine, internet works, but can't see it on the network, can't see the network on the ipad
bluetooth, yes attached my phone to it, but can't see any way of copying files (can't see any file manager at all)

dropbox, nope, browser too old
Managed to back it up onto his icloud (password saved on the ipad I suppose), but cannot access the icloud because lost password, and the related email account is obsolete
app store say - wait for it, cannot access itunes
chrome download, the page display very badly, and click on the download button but nothing happens

most websites on safari bleat about javascript lacking, but it IS enabled

I can do better with the error messages if necessary, really I want the £$%^&*( thing out of my hair, get the photos off and job done, suggestions please
