Thanks again aldfort, I checked Device Manager, and there is one item with an error - "Base System Device"

I looked it up and found that the device is the Intel Chipset video driver, but I have a separate GPU and I've disabled the onboard video, so I'm not sure what to do with this error of even if it matters. I think my chipset driver is up to date, but it's been a while, this CPU is 8 years old.

Also, "Update Driver" didn't do anything. Does it ever? :)

UPDATE: I found some optional updates in Windows Update and installed them all. This cleared up my Device Manager issue, it's all clean now.

Also checked my recently installed programs, nothing there suspicious.

Not sure what else to try here.

In the meantime I'm just letting my monitor go to sleep and leaving the computer running, as I have backup processes running overnight and I'm not used to the startup time every time I want to use the computer.

Thanks for anything else you guys can offer in the way of troubleshooting and/or solutions!

Must admit I am stumped now.

The only thing I can think is that windows no longer recognises the windows key on your keyboard as a wake up command. That could be due to putting USB devices to sleep whem you put the pc into sleep mode.

I take it a mouse shake does not wake the PC up either?

Yeah, I doubled checked again, USB devices suspend is disabled, always has been

Odd that both keyboard press OR mouse shake don't wake up Windows now

In Device Manager delete the keyboard if have not done so before. Reboot.   Could be corruption of MS 2006 driver.....

Note : there are 2 keyboards : Generic and a Logitech. Both using 2006 drivers, If LOGI s attached see model on bottom of keyboard and see if any Logi Drivers.

Thanks

I deleted the keyboards from Device Manager and rebooted, but Windows put back 2 keyboards. I have a Logitech mouse, but an Insignia keyboard. Anyway, that didn't make any difference.

The hard drive with the "error" is a few reallocated sectors and has been the case for a long time. I'm monitoring it regularly to see if it ever changes.

I'm using the Purple drive as a regular drive (it's for daily backups in case the other one goes kaput)

Also tried resetting my power scheme, but that didn't help either.

If the Logi was paired as a Combo and if the Insignia was a combo then there is conflicting info regarding their receivers if are all wireless.

Have you tried a Wired Keyboard. ?

They are both wired, bought separately

I'm running them through a KVM switch to share them (and monitor) with my laptop

Ah, you are using a switch.

That makes a big difference. What make and model of switch are you using?

Does the laptop suffer from the same problem as the PC in not waking up?

Have you tried swapping the connections to the two PC's? Have you by chance re-arranged the desk, switch, monitor recently?

Just for giggles take the switch out of the equation and connect the peripherals direct to the PC.

This switch: kvm : Amazon.ca: Electronics

No the laptop is my work laptop, it has its own set of issues LOL, I just close the lid to put it to sleep, and it'll come back OK as long as it's still plugged into power. If it's on battery, it'll shut down fully when you close the lid, even if it's for 5 minutes and the battery is full. This is the case whether or not it's connected to the switch.

I'll try bypassing the switch as a test, thanks

The only thing I've changed lately is actually the power cabling in my workspace. I've always had an APC UPS, and the desktop PC and monitor has always been plugged into it (in the backup ports). I only got another power block for my external speaker monitors and a new subwoofer. For a bit I had plugged my laser printer into the UPS, but it started complaining (beeping) so I plugged the printer back directly into the wall (I forgot you shouldn't plug printers into a UPS).

But it's hard to imagine any of this would affect sleep and wake on my PC

Thanks

Neel

UPDATE:

I bypassed the KVM switch for mouse, keyboard, and monitor. The problem persists.

To reiterate the symptoms and conditions:

PC goes into sleep as expected

Upon wake up, CPU fan and case fans turn back on, hard drive is whirring

Keyboard and mouse DO NOT light up

No video signal

Windows 10 is up to date. Video drivers are up to date.

Fast boot is off. Hibernation is off. USB power suspend is disabled.

This is sounding a lot more like a video card issue. That said, I am truely stumped.

You've checked the drivers for the video card are upto date and that the card is the default? Only ever get video card drivers from the video card maker's site.

Yes, I'm using the NVIDIA GeForce Experience software. An update just came in two days ago, after this problem started. I'm using the Studio driver. I also disabled the Intel onboard video in BIOS

One thing I just tried too, I opened a blank Word doc. Put the PC to sleep. "Woke it up" again, pressed Enter to open the pin number login, put in my pin number, and then typed something. Even though the screen was off, if it was just video, when I rebooted the PC, the next text should show up in the Word doc. No such thing though, when I rebooted, the Word doc was the same.

I thought maybe it was video too, but this test and the fact that the keyboard and mouse don't light up either tells me it's not the video.

Modern computers use the onboard video until the bigger card is needed and then both will run in demanding work.

Suggest reenadle the obboard and update it's drivers.

Where did the video drivers come from that you updated with ? If it was MS Update Drivers use DDU to remove all drivers and stick back in the makers drivers.

MS Drivers are cut down versions of makers drivers,  is like a apple with a bite out of it.  There is a difference and can ruin installs by using them or create problems.

The MiniToolBoxReport needs to have those things fixed Application errors: & System errors and CodeIntegrity Errors:

when put into their context it is actually a mess and it can cause issues, Until fixed (or a Clean Install is performed) it is unknown what their combined issues represent to the system as a whole.  Needed Certificates is a wake issue as it woukd want hose and are missing.. (like rolling over in bed and turn light on except the bulb is not there.)

As well all the plugins you are using is a unknown factor,  Each would need to be followed up for issues and /or possibly uninstalled and see if that plugin is the issue and so forth.

i7 7700  when uninstall on-board Video using DDU should reinstall from your Support Page : https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/97128/intel-core-i77700-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-20-ghz/downloads.html

Reboot and then update and try running those.  NOTE : that page is usually taken down by now.  Suggest keep a copy safe some where.  As well the chip has on-board

Optane Memory.

Would try disable the other Video and run the above and see what happens.

Can try using Process Explorer to see what maybe there : https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

See if anything from above sticks to the wall............lol

OMG PK,

I tried using the onboard video instead and now my PC wakes up just fine. Does this mean my NVIDIA GeForce card is messed up? Or the NVIDIA driver? It was just updated two days ago, and that was after this problem started, so it was happening on the previous driver too.

Thanks so much for the suggestion, that never would have occurred to me.

But of course, I would still rather use my NVIDIA card, that thing speeds up my video renders by a factor of 10.
