I'll keep that in the wings for the moment. I'm still trying ot figure out where the configuration place is, and how to use it.

Is there a dictionary type thing that will explain the jargon? That would help me as I am not sure what things in my system are or what to use them for. A laypersons dictionary would be a great thing if there is such a thing.

Ahhh yes, just what I need. Thank You. Now I will spend some time studying. Nothing else better to do on a day when it's over 100 outside, again, and a comfortable 80 range in my office.

best way to install updates in ubuntu
i dont use the update manager because over the years i have gotten broken packages
run this command from the terminal and you will never get a broken package

sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
you will be prompted for you password, enter it

Typing history at the terminal will also show your most recent commands.

You can even repeat a command prefixing the history number with !

Code:history

560 man zip
561 ls
562 vi foo.php
563 locate vimrc


!562
The !562 will repeat the "vi foo.php" command.

Thanks rburkartjo. The newbie guide was helpful. I found what I needed to make some changes to address the way I use my machine. Now I think a little bit of playing is in order, since I am on vacation. Catch up with you later.
