If you absolutely have to use dual boot . . .

Windows 8.1 (Home) dual booting with Linux Mint 18.1 on a notebook that's widely known for becoming bricked upon booting from a Live distro, let alone install. Google 'Samsung Series 7 Chronos Bricked by Linux' and there'll be plenty of reading, yet not this one!

Fast running notebook also, with a true quad core i7 3635QM CPU. not a wimpy sub-20W dual core wannabe model that's mainstream today. Only bad side is that the single RAM module slot has went bad, so am running on the soldered in place 4GB RAM, which is plenty for Linux Mint MATE 64 bit, had both Firefox & Chrome open & still just under 2GB usage, so should be great for my wife to use.

Now just have to perform the trick that Naught shown us in the OP, will be fully ready, other tweaks has been made. I can see the first line of code with gedit, just not the second (GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT). Am I supposed to add that line under the first?

Madman, thanks for the assist, the Linux EFI & /boot fell into place! :thumbup2:

All is still running very well, much more so than I initially thought to be, took a chance with the dual boot & won.......knock on wood!

Performing full disc images weekly and keeping important data off of the 'C' drive as generated can be the best defence against Malware/Ransomware attacks, as well as a wide range of other issues.

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved

GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

That's it! By default the second line may not be there, and has to be added.

Common PEBKAC errors include:

Make sure you use the syntax as above. You can cut and paste it from here.

Make sure you have root privileges to edit the file.

Make sure you run update-grub after you save the file.

Still though having skills in gparted helps.

My main SSD has no less than 7 partitions

Partition 1 is recovery

Partition 2 is for windows EFI

Partition 3 is windows reserved

Partition 4 is windows itself

Partition 5 is linux EFI

Partition 6 is a separate /boot partition

Partition 7 is my root for linux

I would love to see your sudo parted -l

I assume this is on GPT?

Have you looked to see if Linux actually installs anything to the "Linux EFI"? if so I wonder what the "/boot" contains?

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

@Naught, thanks, started using this last night! Haven't had the need till now and may need it again soon. It appears that it can be used with EFI Systems also?
