Personally I would not get a laptop now and then in a few months have a desktop.
Instead do it all at once and get the desktop - it saves not having to buy twice just the once; and maybe at best the laptop and desktop will be both low tier, if trying to budget and save on both at the same time.
So the outcome will be owning a low tier laptop and a low tier desktop.
So why not get the desktop that is not at the just a low tier but a slightly higher low tier (closer to mid range) desktop - it will be more value for you considering you will have a couple more years of enjoyment before it becomes obsolete and it would be money well spent just the once instead of not so well spent twice.

I'm really considering this for $ 350
Acer Aspire 3, 15.6" FHD Display, AMD Ryzen 7 5700U Processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 11 Home
If I buy this I can still save for a gaming Desktop in the future. I'm just not home enough to invest in a gaming desktop just yet. What do you guys think???
Thank You for everybody's input.

I didn't even realize that it had 2 slots for a hard drive. I'm looking at upgrading it now. A few years would be nice.
Any idea how much Memory this laptop can hold???

Cores and chips. Read reviews is best way to find out how data travels from them but the Motherboard is the one that moves it around.
Dual ans Quad are imho (even though have 2 quad Intel chips) are gone by with the advent of 16 cores.
You keep straying from what I have suggested. Shipped within 4 days
I am a solid believer in spending your money once. Not do will get later. Later never comes.
@ PK :-
Whilst your insights and recommendations are always appreciated - after all, I recommended you for the Advisor's position on this basis - you DO rather tend to assume that everybody can afford to throw money at top-end, high-spec computer hardware. This is not always the case, as I'm sure you're aware. !
Like many Linux users - the choice of which is usually engendered by disillusionment with M$'s way of doing things! - I compute on a budget. I've never had the amount of money to "throw at" computing that I might perhaps like; indeed, keeping a roof over my head, clothes on my back & food in my belly has always taken a far higher priority. The fact that Linux permits keeping much older hardware still useful & functional is simply a bonus, of course......and means that I don't HAVE to cripple myself financially in order to "keep up with the Jones's".
(I'm no gamer, although I do enjoy wasting the odd half-hour on occasion. My preference for indie games also means that my "low-tier" Intel Pentium G5400 & Asus GeForce GT710 are perfectly capable of coping with them. Things like Xonotic, RedEclipse and UrbanTerror define the extent of MY gaming 'involvement'. I'm more than happy with this stuff.)
It's always helpful to try and work with people within their financial envelope. Yes, we can all dream, but at the end of the day, practicality has to take pole position...
Mike.

Hi @Mike_Walsh at times. Start by showing what a real laptop/desktop is. let them know to take interest in the parts that are being used when building.
OP then brought back to reality of budget but still wants what they want, throw them into Partspicker to find appropriate Country, prices and needed wattage and any problems with parts picked again reality sets in.
Though Laptops are a harder thing for OP's to understand that it may work great for 6-8mos but then a laptop bogs down if not enough ram or room.
Again reality and budget and they find others then to discuss and then suggest little tweaks along the way..

You need to include the Model # info.
as this Aspire 3 only holds 12gig : https://www.memorystock.com/memory/AcerAspire3A31521.html if they have stuck in 16gig then they have overstocked it and can run into problems with the motherboard or chip.
EDIT : one reason to stay away from Acer/HP/Dell/Lenovo they are not that up-gradable. (imho they are a business system only in the price range you are looking at, and poor systems at that.) Put Linux on it and would be fine as Mike explained..
