Fantastic post. This has helped me a lot - I got a question on my VCE test saying:
Which of the following is a public IP address?
A: 10.4.160.1
B: 55.5.254.1
C: 172.17.45.12
D: 192.168.100.100
Well the correct answer is B - This post helped me understand why, and how to tell what kind of IP address is what.

would I be presumptuous in asking that when you build a web site and are ready to go online with it using FTP...that having a private IP would be safer?

This is a great post..thank you in advance for what i have learned so far. I am referring to a private IP address for the web server...
that being said..just a thought and question about IP addresses and the possibility of catching the flu..if you will...
Would it be possible to have an alternating IP address so as to not allow malware and all the nasties?

Private IP addresses are not accessible from the Internet. If you give a private IP address to your web server, it will not be accessible from the Internet.

To check whether an IP address is private or public you can analyze and compare its range. Typically a private IP address starts with 192, 172, or 10 where as Public IP address can also start with 172 or 192.
