Mouse movement hangs intermittently

It appears that the problem was the Opera scheduled entry. I removed that three days ago and the mouse has behaved since then. I had periods before when the mouse would work correctly for a day or so but never longer than that. So I am confident that it is finally fixed. I wasn't aware of the Speccy program and that allowed me to find the problem so I am very grateful for that. Please accept my sincere thanks to all that replied. I've been fighting this for close to a year and it is such a relief to be done with it.

Regarding Avast, I haven't been happy with them for some time and have been considering a change so I appreciate the thoughts on those that were mentioned here. It gives me something to think about.

Regarding Avast, if it is the paid version be sure to keep a record of the licence key number just in case you ever want/need to uninstall it for testing purposes, you will need the licence number for any reinstall that is within the subscription period.
